Bonabes-Louis-Victurnien-Alexis de Rougé

The eldest son of the marquise de Rougé. The family stayed at the duchess's Moreuil property for several months in 1790 before retreating back to Paris (and emigrating shortly thereafter) following a tense stand-off between the duchess and local inhabitants (see the Letter extract for 30 August 1790). In the absence of any children of her own, or any other close young relatives, the duchess took a considerable interest in advancing the careers of both the marquise de Rougé's sons. The family trio feature in a celebrated 1787 portrait by Élisabeth-Louise Vigée Le Brun, 'The Marquise de Pezay, and the Marquise de Rougé with Her Sons Alexis and Adrien'. Both brothers went on to have prominent political careers on their return to France after the Restoration.
