A parish priest who was elected bishop of the Calvados department following the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1790, he embraced the French Revolution with enthusiasm. Elected to the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention, he was a member of the Girondin faction. He was tried alongside Brissot and twenty other Girondins on 30 October 1793, and guillotined with them the following day.
